About the event

Wars and armed conflicts currently taking place in Europe and on four other continents are challenging world security systems and international law in a new way. In the 21st century, the destruction of people and living infrastructure can be observed in real time, but so far, we see hardly any effective initiatives by major international organizations to put an end to this destruction.

The congress “Living Humanity” explores pressing questions: Which global institutions are responsible for this? How does jurisdiction against war criminals work today? What is the connection between the wars of the 20th century and the conflicts of the present? What global power relations can be discerned from the current situation and to what extent do these stand in the way of fundamental solutions?

Before these questions can be answered, it is necessary to update the concepts of justice, jurisdiction, human rights, responsibility, and solidarity. Renowned experts, human rights activists, lawyers, thinkers, and journalists will come together for two days in Nuremberg to discuss and search for answers.

Focusing on the Russian war against Ukraine, we will talk about the resistance to the unchained violence, which is an instrument of power and an alarm signal for humanity. The title of the congress “Living Humanity” refers to Hannah Arendt's idea of essential thinking in “dark times” and the possibilities of effectively enforcing and defending the universalism of human rights today.

With Raji Abdul Salam, Sonja Biserko, Omri Boehm, Patrick Desbois, Andreas Føllesdal, Vane Jordash, Wolfgang Kalleck, Carmit Klar-Chalamish, Tetiana Mazur, Christoph Möllers, Mira Anneli Naß, Angelika Nußberger, Oksana Pokalchuk, Maksym Rokmaniko, Vesna Teršelič, Andrej Umanskyj and others.

Registration for the congress is now open. You are warmly invited to participate in this important dialogue.
