Hosts: Lars Breuer (Germany) and Yeva Yakubovska (Ukraine)
The workshop invites participants to engage with competing memories by reflecting on their own contexts of remembrance. Michael Rothberg’s concept of Multidirectional Memory will be discussed as an analytical tool to deconstruct (competing) memory narratives. Building on this, we will examine how Russia has weaponized WWII memory to spread disinformation and reinforce colonial narratives about Ukraine. We will explore the historical roots of these narratives, their resurgence since 2022, and their impact on global memory. We aim to promote a pluralistic, inclusive commemoration of WWII.
