8. The Winner Tells the Story? Memory, Power and WWII Narratives Location: (will be announced later)

Hosts: Lucy Ann Bayliss (Great Britain) and Steffen Kamenicek (Germany)

How come the black and white facts that we read in our history textbooks differ depending on where we live? In this workshop, we will explore both the written narratives and the physical memorials that shape public memory cultures across the globe. We will dig deeper into the typical historical narratives that participants may be familiar with, considering how and why individual countries and groups have adopted different, at times contradictory versions of events, and asking ourselves if a universal narrative is ever truly possible, or is it always the winner that gets to hold the pen?
