Our new 8-part series explores how East Asia is tackling disinformation and hate speech. The vests belong to the Externer Link: Fake News Cleaner, a grassroots movement run by 160 volunteers. They’re on a mission to teach citizens how to spot misinformation and scams.

Glossary
Grassroot movement
A social or political movement that originates from the ordinary people at a local level rather than from leadership or elite groups.
Misleading
Providing incorrect or deceptive information that may cause someone to form an inaccurate understanding or belief.
Scams
Fraudulent schemes designed to deceive individuals and obtain money or personal information.
Information literacy
The ability to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use that information effectively.
Verify
To confirm the accuracy or truth of something through investigation or evidence.
Misinformation
False or misleading information spread without intent to deceive.
