After the end of the Second World War, the full extent of the systematic murder of six million European Jews became known to the global public. In our histoPOD podcast we speak to international experts to learn how the Holocaust is remembered in different countries. How has commemoration of the Holocaust developed over time? Who was involved in looking back and analysing the past? And what does critical engagement with the Holocaust mean for the countries’ own history?

Dovid Katz is a New York born scholar of the Yiddish language, Lithuanian Jewish culture, and Holocaust historiography. He founded and led Yiddish studies at Oxford University for 18 years, and, after a stint at Yale, settled in Vilnius where he was professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Vilnius University for 11 years. For the last decade, he has been an independent scholar and Holocaust history advocate. His current projects are a new online English-Yiddish dictionary , a video archive of the last in-situ Yiddish (LYVA) based on three decades of expeditions to the “last mohicans”. His works include Grammar of the Yiddish Language, Lithuanian Jewish Culture, The Unfinished History of Yiddish, Yiddish and Power as well as hundreds of papers and articles. He is at work on a book on the new incarnation of Holocaust Denial.

Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die systematische Ermordung von sechs Millionen jüdischen Menschen Europas in ihrem vollen Ausmaß vor der Weltöffentlichkeit offenbar. Im Jahr 2021 jährte sich die Operation Barbarossa - der Codename für den deutschen Überfall auf die Sowjetunion - zum achtzigsten Mal, und in vielen Augen begann damit die völkermörderische Phase des Holocaust, die im Juni 1941 im Baltikum und darüber hinaus ihren Anfang nahm. In dieser Ausgabe sprechen wir mit Dovid Katz, einem in Vilnius lebenden, in Brooklyn geborenen Wissenschaftler für Jiddisch und litauisch-jüdische Kultur und Spezialisten für Holocaust-Geschichtsschreibung.
