Hansen, a Stasi spy is working under cover in the American military secret service department. His task is to smuggle back to the GDR some highly damaging intelligence about a planned attack on East Berlin. Using all the tricks, careful calculation and sophisticated espionage tools at his disposal, Hansen carries out his plans; but then the West German secret service crosses his path... Students analyse how this ideologically cliché-ridden DEFA film represents 'us and them' – the home side and the enemy – and study the role of the security services during the Cold War; they also examine the Horst Hesse case, on which the film is based.
