Experts and professionals from all over Europe will debate the future of civic education in societies of immigration at the "Rethinking Citizenship Education in European Migration Societies" conference, taking place in Lisbon from April-26th-28th, 2007.
Integration and migration are at the top of Europe´s political agenda. Events like the terrorist attacks in Madrid and London, the assassination of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, and the youth riots in Paris have led to a debate, often plagued by fear, about how societies of immigration can best prepare for the future. That topic is the focus of the upcoming conference in Lisbon (April 26-28, 2007), sponsored by the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) and European partner organisations. More than 200 experts and professionals from all over the continent will come to Portugal to discuss the consequences of the climate of fear for the field of civic education, as well as to present projects that have had success combating it.
The involvement and cooperation of our many European partners – the major sponsors include the "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation" – shows that civic educators all over Europe are reacting to rising migration with a wide range of new proposals. Discussions in Lisbon will seek to reflect that, and will address questions involving education and religious identity in a secular society, mediation of Europe´s greatest 20th century catastrophe, the Holocaust, to a new 'multicultural' generation of students, the social and economic problems posed by migration, and changes to school curricula in light of intercultural education.
The list of participants includes social and political scientists, experts on Islam and migration, multipliers from the field of civic education, representatives from schools and training centres, and staff from NGOs and migrant organisations.
