In 2014 all eyes are focused on the forthcoming European Parliament elections. There is considerable evidence that populist and nationalist parties will gain a lot of votes.
In this situation citizenship education in Europe is of substantial importance and carries responsibility. The reasonable criticism of the EU has to be taken seriously and has to be discussed at a transnational level. At the same time, the opportunities of political participation need to be promoted.
Will a common intervention of politics and citizenship education be successful at the transnational level?
Within the framework of the NECE New Year's Reception the Externer Link: NECE Initiative discussed these and other questions with Members of the European Parliament, scholars as well as practitioners and stakeholders in citizenship education
Four scenarios on the future of the EU in 2030 were presented in a video clip. Doris Pack, MEP and well-known Dutch publicist Paul Scheffer were present to discuss their ideas with the audience. The transnational initiative Externer Link: Vote Match Europe (based on a Voter Application Advice System, which was used by 13 million people during the last parliamentary elections in Germany) introduced the first outcomes of their project.
The goal of this evening was to spark a dialogue between citizenship education and European policymakers.
